Why Make This Recipe

  • These golden crispy chips and loved by the whole family.
  • They are healthier than store bought equivalents.
  • Budget-friendly and super quick to whip up.
  • Uses staple ingredients that you already have in your store cupboard.
  • Versatile and easy to substitute spices and sweetness to your taste.
  • Double or triple to feed a crowd.

Ingredient Notes

  • Tortillas – This homemade tortilla chips recipe uses store bought corn tortillas which are then cut into size. You can use flour tortillas instead of corn tortilla, but they turn out less crispy than corn chips and cook much quicker, so bear that in mind. Also you can start with these homemade Corn Tortillas but these may be a bit thicker and so the cook time will be different.
  • Oil – Use low calorie spray to cut calories or use olive oil if you prefer.
  • Optional – various seasoning and salt. Sea salt flakes is the easiest seasoning but see further below for ideas.

Recipe Tips

  • Keep a close eye on them near the end of the cook time as they go from golden to burn very quickly.
  • Also note, these crisp up as they cool down, so don’t try and over cook them if they seem a little soft at the end of cook time.
  • If you prefer round Air Fryer Tortilla Chips then use a cookie cutter to cut out circles.
  • You can use a pizza cutter instead of a knife if you prefer.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer, lay chips in a basket in a single layer so that the air circulates and you end up with crispy chips. You will need to air fry them in batches.
  • Use long tongs to carefully turn your air fried tortilla chips over halfway through cooking.
  • You can absolutely make this with your favorite low carb tortillas.
  • Remember that flour tortillas can be used for this but the cook time will be different.
  • Make some amazing Air Fryer Nachos by topping with salsa, seasoned black beans, and melted cheese. #somuchyum

Delicious Variations

I have kept this version simple so that it can be served with EVERYTHING. However, you can customize it all the ways like sprinkle with salt and more.

  • Make it herby – add in herbs like oregano, dried thyme or dried parsley
  • Make it spicy –  add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, chili powder or curry powder.
  • Make it tangy – squeeze on some lime juice or lemon juice before air frying.
  • Make it sweet – add some maple syrup and cinnamon.

Storage

  • Store – Let them cool completely before storing in an airtight container at room temperature for about 5 days.
  • Reheat – Warm them up at 350F / 180C for a couple of minutes.
  • Freeze – We don’t recommend freezing this recipe.

FAQs

How Do You Know When The Chips Are Done?

Depending on if you like them crispier, but when the edges start turning golden brown is a good sign they’re done. Pull them out as they go from golden crispy to burned very fast.

How Long Do You Cook These In The Air Fryer?

Depends on how crispy you like then and your air fryer cooking time. Since air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model, this recipe includes a range of suggested cook times. I recommend starting with less time, checking for doneness, and then adding more time as needed.

I have tried low carb tortillas, flour tortillas and corn tortillas, and I think corn tortillas give the best results with crispy chips. Start with your favorite brand, compare them to a couple of other brands and see which you prefer.
