These super crispy Air fryer chickpeas are my latest snack craze. One that I am happy to share with you and try to bring you over to the ‘crispy smoky Air Fried Chickpeas’ love side.

Easy Snacking

I have been using my air fryer to make a whole load of snacks and appetizers like these Air Fryer Green Beans, Air Fryer Chicken Tenders, and Air Fryer Chickpea Tacos with much success and am pleased to now have one more healthy snack in my repertoire.

Worry not, if you don’t have an air fryer, as I will work you through how to make crispy chickpeas in the oven instead. Of course, It will take a tiny bit longer but stick with it as it is worth it.

See, all the good stuff. Simply whip up a batch or two of chickpeas in an air fryer for snacking, game days, appetizers, the holidays and more. Kiddoes love them just as much as the adults.

Why Make This Recipe

  • They are soooooo crunchy on the outside and yet soooooo creamy on the inside.
  • They are made with just 5 everyday ingredients and a less than 5 minutes prep time.
  • These work great making super colourful and crunchy Chickpea Tacos.
  • They are a great make ahead snack and are perfect for eating on the go.
  • The recipe is easy doubled or tripled to feed a snacking crowd.

Ingredient Notes

  • Chickpeas – this uses garbanzo beans aka chickpeas drained and rinsed from a can. Dry the chickpeas thoroughly using paper towels or napkins before adding the seasoning in.
  • Oil – For the best results use a good quality olive oil, but canola oil and peanut oil works too. The olive oil coats the chickpeas and helps make them crispy.
  • Seasonings – smoked paprika and cumin give this all the smoky flavor.
  • Salt – feel free to use the best sea salt and pepper (if you want) to complete this delicious snack.

  • Mix the oil, paprika, cumin and salt in a bowl, then stir in the rinsed and drained chickpeas till they are all coated.
  • Spread chickpeas out on a roasting tray and roast for 20-30 minutes, stirring a few times during cooking.
  • Cook until the chickpeas are golden and crispy on the outside, but creamy and soft on the inside.

Recipe Tips

Some tips to help you make the perfect roasted chickpeas air fryer.

  • For the chickpeas to crisp up, you have to make sure they are completely dry before you add the spiced oil mixture. Dry them using dish cloths. You can put them all in one scrunched up dish cloth and roll them around in it, or you can dry them by rolling them between 2 napkins. You can also dry chickpeas in the air fryer basket too.
  • You can add an extra minute or two for crispier chickpeas. Do keep an eye on them though as they burn very quickly.
  • If you want to prep ahead the chickpeas, then do and let them cool down completely before keeping in an airtight container for a couple of hours.
  • Do not overfill the air fryer basket so that enough air circulates to crisp up the chickpeas.

Chefs tip: the longer you cook the chickpeas they crisper the become. These below were cooked for 15 mins.

As air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model, this recipe includes a range of suggested cook times.

Delicious Variations

  • Vary the spices – You can easily vary the spices you add to the chickpeas to your taste. Add others like garlic powder, onion powder,
  • Add in heat – These also work well with a dash of sriracha or chipotle sauce or chili powder mixed in.

Storage

  • Store cooled chickpeas at room temperature in a paper bag for a couple of days.

FAQs

Is The Air Fryer Better Than The Oven?

Yes it can be. Don’t use more than 2 tbsp in your air fryer when “frying” anything which is great for your waistline. The air fryer uses a power fan to move air throughout while cooking your food. The air fryer is quicker than the convection oven and will crisp your food faster and better than the oven.

What Temperature To Air Fry Chickpeas?

For this recipe you need to air fry chickpeas at 390F. If you fry them at a lower temperature you may need to add a little bit more cook time.

What Is The Serving Size?

On can of chickpeas will serve 4 fas a snack.

Roasted Chickpeas For Gifting

These delicious smoky roasted chickpeas will make the perfect edible gift. Simply whip them up on the day you will gift them, let them cool down and then transfer them to a mason jar before adding your very own homemade with love gift tags. Pretty cellophane bags or paper bags work too.
