Changes to the UK Government’s traffic light system for travel could be announced within hours – with several nations poised to lose green status.

Croatia, Iceland and Madeira are among the at-risk destinations that could downgraded to amber in the forthcoming review, which could be announced by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps as soon as this evening.

Several countries are under threat of demotion with experts pinpointing nations under threat from rising Covid infections.

Based on global Covid rates and available data, Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, Dominica, Croatia, Iceland, Israel and Madeira are all at risk from losing green list status.

Data expert Tim White tweeted: “I predict Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada and Dominica will be moved from green watchlist to amber tomorrow.

“Anguilla and Turks and Caicos are also at risk, but with such small populations, may survive.”

Meanwhile, officials representing Turkey have stated they expect the country to be taken off the UK’s red list for travel and moved to amber.

It has been on the red list since the traffic light system for international travel was announced in May. The Turkish embassy in London said: “The scientific data on Covid-19 support our expectation that Turkey will be removed from the red list at the upcoming review.”

Travel expert Paul Charles, of The PC Agency, said latest analysis showed Turkey may be upgraded to the Amber category.

He tweeted: “Encouraging to see Turkey now supplying substantial data about infections and any variants. Its case to be moved to amber in Thursday’s traffic light review is strong, especially in the context of India’s move from red to amber earlier this month.”

Morocco and Jamaica are said to be at risk of being relegated to the red category, according to industry experts.
