We know that getting on a plane and jetting off somewhere sunny this year might be difficult.
With constantly changing regulations and uncertainty surrounding rising coronavirus infection rates and variants, many of us will choose to stay at home this year rather than holiday abroad.
If you’re anything like us, that means you might find yourself getting teary eyed about missing out on all of the great food and drink you’d normally be indulging on during your summer holidays.
But it’s not all bad. Luckily, we’re blessed with some seriously great places to eat here in Newport, some of which we think are the real deal.

From pizza that rivals Neapolitan fare, to tapas so fresh you’d think you were sitting in a bar in Seville, we’ve put together a list of some of the best places to grab your holiday favourites right here in the city.
That way, even if you don’t manage to travel anywhere in 2021, at least you don’t have to miss out on the most important bit – the delicious food.

This family-run Italian in Rogerstone is as authentic as it gets. Serving up the freshest dishes under the supervision of owners Massimo and Gianluca, it’s not uncommon to hear a fair bit of Italian being spoken in the restaurant, which can only be a good sign.
From fresh pasta and wood-fired pizza, to delicious cocktails and homemade desserts, Mamma Linas is the perfect spot if you’re looking to escape to Italy for a couple of hours.
Where: 68 Tregwilym Rd, Rogerstone, Newport NP10 9EJ. There is also a second Mamma Linas in Cardiff, at 74 Albany Road, CF24 3RS.

Another family-owned and family-run Italian with a loyal customer base, Vittorio’s is the real deal. Opened by Vittorio in 1989, the Italian native was keen to bring some of the best cuisine from his homeland to Wales.
Still a family-run restaurant today, the dishes on the menu would not be out of place in Italy, with everything from arrancini, calamari and authentic Neapolitan pizza to cannoli and tiramisu.

Time to hop over the Mediterranean to Spain now for one of Newport’s best tapas joints, New Olé.
Not able to make it to Spain this year for your regular summer getaway? At least you can pop into New Olé and try their mouthwatering paella, Iberico ham croquette and churros. Also, there’s sangria on tap, so what’s not to love?

The Priory in Caerleon is a place that gets a lot of superlatives thrown at it, and for good reason. If you’ve ever walked into the dining room of this beautiful former-monastery, the enormous selection of fresh seafood and meats on display is a sight that will leave your mouth watering for days.
In addition to that, there’s also the Priory’s Little Red Van, which parks outside and offers some of the most delicious wood fired pizza available.

Monusk Tapas & Wine Bar

A popular spot on Newport’s foodie scene, it speaks volumes that Monusk has earned itself such a loyal customer base in the short few years it has been open.
Sitting right on the River Usk, Monusk is inspired by the trading routes in and out of Newport, meaning that you get to eat some of the best Spanish-style food with some of the nicest views in Newport. From platters of meats and cheeses to fresh seafood like whitebait, there’s plenty of delicious tapas options on the menu here.

Secret Garden Cafe

Tucked away in the city centre, the Secret Garden Cafe is a great little spot if you want to come and get away from all the stress for a few hours.
This cosy little bar and bistro puts on a tapas night regularly, with everything made fresh in-house.
