Viewers of the BBC’s new drama, Vigil, were not disappointed with a scintillating first episode from the makers of Line of Duty.

Vigil – which premiered on BBC One on Sunday – takes place on a Royal Navy submarine and involves an investigation into a suspicious death.

The thriller looks at the people on board the HMS Vigil and the trials and tribulations they face while working at close quarters for long stretches of time.

Among the all-star cast is Suranne Jones – who plays the lead role of DCI Amy Silva – who is supported by the likes of Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie, Endeavour’s Shaun Evans, and Line of Duty’s Martin Compston.

It’s a series that started with a bang and within in the first eight minutes of the episode starting, Compston’s character Craig Burke is killed off.

The reaction from viewers on social media was tremendous with many left inconsolable that one of their favourite actors may no longer be appearing in the rest series.

Andrew said: “Bit odd that a superstar like Martin Compston gets bumped off in the first 10 minutes, maybe there’s flashbacks to come?”

Alex Wood said: “You mean to tell me they hired Martin Compston to do a series and then killed him off after five minutes?”

Tara Barrick said: “Photos of Martin Compston have had more screen time than he actually did.”

Joe said: “No way did they just kill off Martin Compston in the first episode.”

Claire Norman said: “Enjoying people trying to convince themselves that Martin Compston isn’t really dead or that he’ll be in loads of flashbacks. Pretty sure we all got played.”

Neil said: “Don’t look at the Martin Compston hashtag if you haven’t watched Vigil yet.”

The next episode of Vigil will feature on Bank Holiday Monday at 9pm.
