Here are the latest Cardiff City transfer headlines for Monday, August 9.

Wilson speaks out on Fulham move and Liverpool regret

Former Cardiff City star Harry Wilson says he’s made the right decision in finally calling time on his Liverpool career, but admits he’s disappointed with how it panned out.

The Wales international recently completed a move to Fulham in a deal which could be worth around £12m after another summer of speculation, with Cardiff among those believed to have been keen on taking him on.

Wilson marked his move to west London with a debut goal on the opening day of the new season, and believes the time was right for him to end his 16-year stint on Merseyside.

“I wouldn’t say it was an easy thing to do, but it is definitely the right thing for me,” he told Goal. “I know I’ve made the right decision.

“Obviously from my point of view I feel a little disappointed I didn’t get more opportunities. And yeah, there were players around who maybe got a few more than I did.

“I am a bit gutted that I wasn’t given maybe half a season at least to prove I deserved to be part of that group.

“I’m sad to leave Liverpool, yes, but there’s so much to look forward to with Fulham. I can’t wait.”

Wilson says Marco Silva was a huge part of convincing him to make the move to the English capital, and reveals he spoke with the manager earlier in the summer following his time with Wales at Euro 2020.

“When you move clubs, it has to be the manager who wants you. The owners and the chief executive, whoever, might like you, but the manager is the one picking the team every weekend. He’s the one that matters.

“In this deal, I feel like it was the manager who drove it forward. When I was on my holidays after the Euros, he was ringing me up. I felt like he’d watched me, that he understood my game. He told me the positions I’d play in his team, how he’d want me to play, and I felt like it’d be a great fit.”

Joniesta’s message to fans

Jonny Williams has paid tribute to Cardiff City fans following his summer departure, and admits his stay didn’t pan out the way he wanted.

Williams was released at the end of last season and, despite initially only signing a short-term deal, admitted he was surprised at the decision, adding that he was under the impression that he would be staying in the Welsh capital.

The 27-year-old is currently without a club since his departure from Cardiff City Stadium, and has now paid tribute to Bluebirds fans following his time with Wales at Euro 2020.

Taking to social media at the weekend, Williams wrote: “Late message due to the Euros.

“Just wanted to thanks all of the CCFC fans for the support since I joined.

“Shame it didn’t’ work out the way I wanted but wishing Cardiff City all the best for the season.

“Looking forward to the next chapter.”

Tan still committed to club

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman insists owner Vincent Tan is still “fully committed” to the club.

Tan has been unable to travel to home games due to the pandemic, and Dalman admits he’s often asked whether the 69-year-old would be interested in selling up.

However, Dalman insists Tan’s enthusiasm for the Bluebirds cannot be questioned.

“Most football club owners are chairmen as well as owners and they are more or less there every game,” Dalman told BBC Radio Wales Sport before Cardiff’s opening day stalemate with Barnsley.

“Vincent on the other hand is incredibly busy, it’s been a turbulent couple of years in Malaysia because of the pandemic and he’s not able to get here as much as he would really like to.

“But I talk to him on a daily basis and he’s fully committed to seeing this club grow.

“People keep asking me is he going to sell the club and I don’t hear that from him.

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed recently but we also appointed a new board member.

“Jalil Rasheed has come on the board and Jalil is the first person to be appointed as CEO of the Berjaya Corporation outside of the Tan family.

“Having him on that board is a great asset for us.”
